What is Progesterone?

Progesterone is a hormone that has been around for about 500 million years which probably makes it the oldest hormone and it is essential to all vertebrates: fishes, reptiles, birds and mammals and most importantly, to humans.  Progesterone plays many roles in BOTH males and females, including regulating blood sugar, developing intelligence, building bones and brain activity.

Progesterone is not exclusively a female hormone nor is it a 'sex' hormone.  It plays no part in the secondary sexual characteristics which develop at puberty.  It is the precursor for the sex hormones estrogen and testosterone.  The main role of progesterone is to keep the level of estrogen in a woman's body in a balanced state.

Our bodies make natural progesterone all the time - this natural progesterone is a unique substance with unique properties that cannot be faked.  it is the single most important hormone made by the female body and is essential for the health of virtually every cell and organ of the body.  Besides helping to regulate the menstrual cycle of women, progesterone also boosts the immune system, reduces swelling and inflammation, stimulates and regulates the production of the thyroid gland, and keeps blood clotting levels at normal values. Progeserone helps with depression and insomnia and it also has a callming effect.  Progesterone is also regarded as an "anti-aging" hormone, helping to keep bones strong, producing collagen and keeping nerves functioning at appropriate levels.

Progesterone and estrogen levels decline as women get older and this gradually leads to menopause.  Low progesterone levels decrease our ability to create new bone cells which can make women more suscepting to developing osteoporosis so it is therefore essential that a woman's body continues to generate progesterone in these post-menopausal years to help prevent conditions like this.

People are often confused between Progesterone and Progestin.  They are NOT the same thing.

Progesterone is a natural hormone made by the body.

Progestin is a synthetic hormone and does not have the same benefits as natural progesterone.  Progestins do not help with the effect of estrogen dominance and and often contribute to the imbalance of your hormones.
